Tesla Down Under

Tesla down under has found another use for tin-foil hats (apart from keeping the CIA out of your mind, obviously) - conducting massive amounts of electricity into your swimming pool, while you're in it! TDU's site is awesome, there are some amazing pictures and movies there, including his Eye of Sauron, anti car jacking device, and Dalek cage (shown in the movie below). (thanks simon.)

Thermodynamics Lives to Fight Another Day

So doomsday came and went and nothing happened. You know, Stoern's Orbo technology, it was going to change everything. Well, unfortunately for all, and unsurprisingly for some, there were some problems and Stoern had to postpone their much anticipated demo. The machinist is running a wonderful piece of schadenfreude on Stoern's problems. I mean over-heating... it's as if there is more energy coming out than is being put in. That's just impossible, right?

Robots.txt for Google Maps

There has been some controversy recently about the street views on google maps. There's a cool image on guiabuscadores blog with a proposal for using robots.txt files to block Google from spidering your house.

LOLCATS, LOLBOTS, and LOLCODE

Paul McNamara ran a piece two weeks ago on the phenomenon of LOLCATS with a link to a great slideshow on Slate. It seems they live here. My favorite (for marv's sake) is probably this one:

All Fun and Games…

Nash Edgerton has created a short movie called Spider that is available on qoob - well worth the watch but it's really disturbing. (thanks knox.)

Snakes on a Plane

Customs officers at Cairo's airport stopped a man, Yahia Rahim Tulba, from boarding a plane for Saudi Arabia. He was found to be carrying 700 live snakes in a carry on bag. I'm not sure where Samuel L. Jackson was at the time, but if those snakes had gotten on board, I'm sure he'd have had something to say about the situation (thanks steve):

The Political Compass

So Bertie finally announced an election date for the next Dáil - May 24th. Graeme ran a piece two weeks ago on Political Compasses showing his score and a comparison of UK political party scores, and said that he could find no suitable UK party to match his score.

RoTM

I've been a fan of xkcd's webcomics for some time now. They had a nice comic out last week that should serve to remind us all about the need for extreme vigilance over all forms of new technology:
CD Tray Fight
The neoLuddite Resistance Army are fighting back against rogue technology over at the Register's Rise of the Machine (RotM) series. It seems that they've come to similar conclusions as Paul McNamara over at Network World's Net Buzz column regarding Toto's extreme clean bidet toilets.

Property Rollercoaster

So everyone's talking about property these days. I came across an interesting visualisation of US property prices on the Freakonomics blog a couple of weeks ago. Richard Hodge over at speculativebubble.com plotted a graph of inflation-adjusted US property onto a roller-coaster video ride using Roller Coaster Tycoon 3.

Pretty dizzy up there at the end, isn't it?

Bin Sniffing

BBC News ran a story a few days ago on the new craze of bin sniffing. Apparently, since legislation in the UK has made it harder for kids to buy glue or lighter fluid, innovative glue-sniffers are finding other sources of amusement. The Scotsman ran a similar story back in 2002 describing how bins and bus shelters were showing up with dinner plate-sized holes in them; the footprint of the bin-sniffers.
